Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
