Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
