Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
