The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
