The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
