During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
